Second Quarter Report

April to June 2008

  • Lobbied members of the Tennessee General Assembly during the current session. Worked to pass legislation to add “gender identity or expression” to the Sentencing Enhancement state, and to permit gender changes on Tennessee Birth Certificates, and against legislation that would discriminate against GLBT persons, including legislation that would ban unmarried, cohabiting couples from adopting children, a bill to silence teachers from discussing sexual diversity, and opposed all Voter ID bills which would disfranchise transgender voters.
  • Continued lobbying Members of Congress and educating the public as part of the United ENDA campaign in support of the Employment Non Discrimination Act and opposing attempts to remove gender identity or expression from employment protections, as well as lobbying in favor of Hate Crimes legislation and equal rights for all LGBT persons.
  • Spoke to Vanderbilt University Law School class, Sexual Orientation and the Law, on April 15.
  • Participated in GLBT Mental Health Summit at University of Tennessee College of Social Work in Nashville on April 17.
  • Participated in panel discussion for the film Ask Not at Nashville Public Library on May 20.
  • Testified before Shelby County Board of Commissioners on behalf of Non-Discrimination Ordinance on June 1.
  • Participated in the Community Tables Event in Nashville on June 6.
  • Participated in Mid-South Pride in Memphis on June 20.
  • Participated in Nashville Pride on June 20.
  • Participated in Knoxville PrideFest on June 27.
