TTPC Applauds FedEx for Adding Gender Identity to Non-Discrimination Policy
The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition (TTPC) applauds Memphis based Federal Express for adding “Gender Identity” to its corporate non-dsicrimination policy, recognizing the value and contributions of transgender workers. FedEx now becomes the largest Tennessee based company to adopt a fully inclusive non-discrimination policy for its employees.
In October 2007, TTPC particpated in a panel discussion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues at FedEx/Express World Headquarters in Memphis at the invitation of the FedEx Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Friends Network, to discuss transgender employee issues and to illustrate to company officials why adding Gender Identity or Expression to its policy was good for business.
Since then, the rash of hate crimes in Memphis against African American transgender women has focused more attention on the city and local hiring policies that have contributed to the anti-transgender atmosphere in Memphis.
Last month, the Shelby County Government (which includes the City of Memphis) passed a non-discrimination resolution for County LGBT employees, on the exact same day that a local TV station broke the news of the shooting of yet another transgender woman.
The announcement, which was released through OneNewsNow is a welcome, positive for FedEx employees in Memphis and around the world.
We appreciate the work of the shareholders, who worked with TTPC, to get the company to expand its non-discrimination policy.
