Metro Nashville to Review Discrimination Against Transgender People

Recently, three members of the Metro Council, Megan Barry, Erik Cole, and Ronnie Steine, sent a letter to the Metro Human Relations Commission asking them to begin looking at discrimination in private employment and housing based on gender identity.  This effort, with which the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition has been involved and strongly supports, will broaden the effort to end discrimination against transgender people in Metro Nashville and Davidson County. We applaud our friends on both the Metro Council and the Human Relations Commission for working with, and on behalf, of transgender workers and residents.

As part of this effort, the Human Relations Commission will hold a Public Listening Forum in Hermitage on March 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  We encourage all transgender residents who can attend this forum to do so and share your stories.  This will be the first such government study in Tennessee focused on discrimination of transgender people.  The data collected will compliment the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (attached) which was recently released by the National Center for Transgender Equality, showing the breadth and depth of discrimination people face across the country based on their gender identity or gender expression.

Refreshments will be served.  If you have questions, please email the Human Relations Commission.
