Transgender and the Census
By now, you have received the forms for the 24th Dicennial Census. Unfortunately, it will not count transgender Americans and residents. There are only two boxes for sex on the form, and if you check both boxes, or neither box, a computer will assign you a gender at random. Therefore, it is recommended that you pick the gender that most closely matches your most common gender presentation.
We urge the counting of Transgender people in the 25th Dicennial Census in 2020.
The Census Bureau is, however, hiring Transgender people to be Census takers. If you are interested in working for the Census Bureau, which is covered by new Federal policy banning discrimination based on gender identity or expression, visit the Census Bureau website at www.2010censusjobs.gov for more information.
